Single core and earth is a flat PVC-sheathed cable with one insulated core and a bare CPC alongside it. It exists mainly to take a protective conductor to a point that needs one without running a full twin cable — most often a switch drop or an accessory being brought up to current standards. It is a small-size product and is not a general power cable.
Key applications
- Switch drops where a CPC is required at the switch position
- Adding a protective conductor to an existing lighting point
- Single switch wires and strappers in a sheathed form
- Short extensions and alterations inside dry or damp premises
Features and benefits
- Carries a CPC without the bulk of a twin cable
- Flat sheath clips and chases the same way as twin and earth
- Sheathed construction means it does not need to be in conduit throughout
- Available with a brown or blue core so line or neutral can be identified
Specification notes and limitations
The bare CPC must be sleeved green-and-yellow at every termination. The single core is supplied in brown or blue and must be correctly identified for the function it actually performs — a blue core used as a switch wire has to be re-identified. The same PVC limits apply as to the rest of the 624 range: 70 °C conductor temperature, derating for thermal insulation and grouping, no mechanical protection, no direct burial in ground, and no prolonged exposure to sunlight.
