The 6940 range is BS 5467 armoured cable built with a high core count for control, instrumentation and auxiliary circuits rather than for power. The cores are small — typically 1.5 or 2.5 mm² — and numbered rather than colour-coded, so a single armoured run can carry a whole set of control, interlock and indication circuits to a remote panel or item of plant.
Key applications
- Control and interlock wiring between panels and field equipment
- Motor control centre to plant item multicore runs
- Indication, alarm and status circuits across a site
- Instrumentation and signalling in industrial environments
- Buried or external control runs where armour is required
Features and benefits
- High core counts let one cable replace several separate runs
- Numbered cores make identification and terminal schedules straightforward
- Armoured construction means control circuits can be buried or run externally
- Same 600/1000 V and 90 °C rating as the power range, so no special derating rules to learn
Specification notes and limitations
This is a power cable construction used for control purposes, not a screened instrumentation cable — it has no screen and offers no protection against induced interference, so it is unsuitable for low-level analogue signals running alongside power circuits. Do not mix circuits of different voltage bands in one multicore unless every core is insulated to the highest voltage present and the arrangement complies with BS 7671. Spare cores should be terminated or identified, not left floating. Armour earthing, gland selection, bending radius and burial requirements are the same as for the power range.
