A low voltage distribution cable with an aluminium phase conductor assembly and a concentric layer of copper wires applied in a waveform pattern, which serves as the combined neutral and earth. The waveform lay lets the concentric layer accommodate bending without the wires bunching or birdcaging, which is what makes the cable practical to install from a drum. It is the standard utility service and distribution construction for 600/1000 V underground work in the UK.
Key applications
- Low voltage mains and service distribution by network operators
- Underground supply cables from distribution substations to feeder pillars
- Street lighting and highway supply circuits
- Service connections to domestic and commercial premises
- Duct and direct buried low voltage distribution routes
- Site distribution on larger developments
Features and benefits
- Waveform concentric copper layer acts as the combined neutral and earth conductor
- Aluminium phase conductors reduce cable weight and metal cost
- Waveform lay accommodates bending without the concentric wires displacing
- Suitable for direct burial, ducts and outdoor routes
- Available in 3 core and 4 core arrangements
Specification notes and limitations
The concentric copper layer is the combined neutral and earth conductor, so it must be continuous and correctly bonded at every joint and termination; a break in it leaves the installation without its earth return. Combined neutral and earth cable is subject to the network operator's rules on where it may and may not be used, and it is not appropriate for all consumer-side installations. Observe the minimum installation temperature, because PVC sheathing handled below it will crack, and keep to the stated bending radius so the concentric wires are not displaced.
