6491X is the single core PVC-insulated building wire used for conduit and trunking work, for the earthing conductor on an installation and for meter tails in its larger sizes. It has insulation only — there is no outer sheath — so it is intended to be enclosed or otherwise protected along its route. The stranded conductor makes it easy to pull through long runs and bends.
Key applications
- Wiring drawn into conduit, trunking and ducting
- Main earthing conductors and protective bonding conductors in green/yellow
- Internal wiring of distribution boards, switchgear and control panels
- Connections to luminaires and fixed appliances
- Riser and submain wiring in enclosed containment
Features and benefits
- Stranded conductor pulls easily and takes tight bends in trunking
- Rated 450/750 V, so it suits three-phase panel and submain work
- Available in the full range of harmonised core colours including green/yellow
- Very wide size range, from small control wiring up to heavy submains
Specification notes and limitations
This is a single-insulated cable. Other than a green/yellow protective conductor, which may be run without further mechanical protection, it must be enclosed in conduit, trunking or equipment and must not be clipped direct, run in a void or buried in plaster as if it were a sheathed cable. The 70 °C PVC limit applies, and conduit and trunking fill factors and grouping both reduce the usable rating. PVC is not UV-stable, so the cable should not be visible outdoors. Terminations must be mechanically sound, as stranded conductors can spread in screw terminals and single strands left outside a terminal are a shock and short-circuit risk.
