BS 6883 Ship Wiring Cable, Braided and Unbraided

BS6883-PWR

BS 6883; fire resistant variants to BS 7917; also assessed against IEC 60092 series, NEK 606 and UKOOA guidelines

The general purpose fixed wiring cable for ships and offshore units, supplied either plain sheathed or with a metallic braid where mechanical protection and an earth path are wanted. Elastomeric insulation rated at 90 °C copes with high ambient temperatures in machinery spaces, and the oil resisting sheath survives the fuel, lubricant and hydraulic fluid exposure that ordinary building cable will not. BS 6883 covers the range from low voltage lighting and small power up to rated voltages of 8.7/15 kV.

Key applications

  • Fixed lighting and small power wiring on vessels and platforms
  • Motor and switchgear supplies in engine rooms and pump rooms
  • Propulsion and thruster power circuits
  • Control and auxiliary wiring between distribution boards and field equipment
  • Deck machinery, winch and crane supplies
  • Topside and accommodation distribution on fixed and mobile offshore units

Features and benefits

  • Braided version gives mechanical protection and a circumferential earth path without the stiffness of steel wire armour
  • Unbraided version is lighter and more flexible for protected routes and trays
  • Oil resisting, flame retardant sheath for marine machinery environments
  • Reduced halogen and halogen free sheath options for manned and enclosed spaces
  • 90 °C continuous rating supports high ambient derating margins

Specification notes and limitations

Where the braided version is used as a protective conductor, braid continuity must be carried through every gland, and glands have to suit both the braid construction and the area classification. Cables for escape routes, accommodation and other critical areas usually need a halogen free sheath and, where circuit integrity in fire is required, a fire resistant construction to BS 7917 rather than a standard BS 6883 type. Marine and offshore installations are normally subject to classification society approval, so confirm that the specific cable carries the required class certification before ordering.
